life changes

There are a number of things in life that you know will ultimately change, but they still come as a relative surprise. I think the first one was with the birth of our first child. My husband and I had been a family of 2 for almost 5 years when our first son arrived. One evening the September after his birth in June we had noticed that the first cool front had arrived and that the weather was cool and crisp and decidedly delightful. My husband asked if I would enjoy a walk in the autumn breezes and I said enthusiastically, yes. We put our windbreakers on and stepped to the front door. It was at that moment that I realized our lives had changed drastically. I told my husband that ‘we’ could not go on a walk. I told him that he could go for a walk or I could go for a walk, but we could not go together because our son was sound asleep in his room. Reality check!

I am currently experiencing a new change that was expected, but still when it began was a total shock and surprise. This change occurred with my mom’s current illness. Suddenly, I am the parent. I do not really know if I am equipped for this role. It is not that she is not independent, she is. She is still capable of making her own decisions, she still drives and she is still in charge of all her faculties. It is just that she has begun to defer to me basic daily decisions – sometimes what to eat, or wear. I know this is somewhat temporary this time, but that ultimately it will be a reality in the future unless God takes her home early.

Changes happen. What do we do when they arrive? Adapt and change along with them. Accept that the path of our lives are ultimately mapped by our Mighty God and He uses them for His glory and our good. When I struggle against the plan, I only prolong the process. Changing our inner attitudes is sometimes no easy feat, but when we choose to accept the situation with grace, we become overcomers with Him.

So – change. It will come.
